A 56-year-old man was remanded in custody after his brief appearance at the Bushbuckridge Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 20 December 2023 for allegedly raping his step grand-daughter who is 10 years old.
The male suspect was arrested on Tuesday night, 19 December 2023 after allegedly taking advantage on his stepdaughter on Monday, 18 December 2023.
According to information, the victim’s mother is said to have visited a male friend, accompanied by her daughter (victim), and whilst she was in the living room, it is reported that, to her surprise, her daughter suddenly came out of her step-grandfather’s room, half naked.
It was during this time that the victim informed her mother that she was allegedly molested by the suspect.
The victim’s mother reportedly took the victim to report the matter at the Bushbuckridge Police Station.
As part of preliminary investigations, the victim was taken to a medical facility, and the suspect was arrested on the night of Tuesday, 19 December 2023, the suspect appeared in court the next day, 20 December 2023.
The suspect was remanded in custody pending his next court appearance on 09 January 2024 for legal representation.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has strongly condemned the inhumane behaviour allegedly committed by someone who was supposed to be the one to protect the victim.
