The Govan Mbeki Municipality Executive Mayor, Cllr. Nhlakanipho Zuma, survived the motion of no confidence during the first ordinary council meeting on Thursday, 30 January 2025.
This came after the Democratic Alliance (DA) filed the motion in December 2024, citing his failure to address last year’s water crisis. The motion highlighted his lack of accountability and inability to address factionalism, which led the municipality to become the province’s worst performer.
The DA said that the ANC has failed to bring stability and effective financial management to the municipality.
The motion was then taken to vote, of which twenty-seven (27) councillors opposed, nine (9) abstained, and only twenty-two (22) were for the motion.
While the council meeting continued, members of the ANC and SACP were picketing outside the Council Chambers in support of the Executive Mayor. They said they believe there has been stability within the municipality since the current administration took over in 2021.
“There is improvement in our local municipality since the current administration, mayoral committee, and Executive Mayor took over.
They must continue with service delivery, as we have seen that we no longer have an issue of load shedding within our municipality,” said Edward (Obama) Letsimo, the Provincial Working Committee of the Youth Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) in Mpumalanga.
