The Gert Sibande District Municipality (GSDM) proudly hosted its Employee Wellness Sports Day on Wednesday, 19 March 2025, at the AJ Swanepoel Stadium in Ermelo, drawing a great turnout of employees who braved the rainy weather to participate in the day’s activities.
The Speaker of Council, Cllr Busisiwe Sekhonde, who was joined by several members of GSDM Council, formed part of the event and participated in the activities. Their participation underscored the municipality’s commitment to promoting wellness in the workplace, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance for all employees.
The municipal manager, Mr Absenia Habile, also came to spend a few minutes with the participants to encourage them to use the time wisely for their wellness in order to create a safe and healthy work environment at work.
Organized by the Department of Corporate Services, the event offered a wide range of activities designed to promote physical fitness, teamwork, and overall well-being. Despite the rainy weather, employees participated enthusiastically in various games, including soccer, aerobics, tug of war, sack races, and the passing the ball challenge. Additionally, the event saw participation from employees of the Msukaligwa Local Municipality, who were invited to join in the fun and engage in the spirit of friendly competition, further strengthening the bond between the two municipalities residing within the same jurisdiction.
The event was generously supported by different stakeholders. Other supporters, including IMAS, AVBOB, Shosholoza Finance, Clicks Pharmacy and Dischem Pharmacy, provided on-site wellness services and health information, ensuring employees had access to valuable resources.
The Employee Wellness Sports Day is part of GSDM’s ongoing efforts to improve the health and well-being of its employees. The municipality believes that such events play a vital role in fostering a more productive, motivated, and engaged workforce.
GSDM shared their appreciation to those who participated and contributed to the success of the event, proving that rain or shine, wellness remains a top priority.
