Police at Delmas successfully recovered a hijacked truck and rescued the hi-jacking victim on Wednesday, 19 October 2022.

The 47-year-old driver of the said truck was found tied up with ropes and wires and it is alleged that the truck was allegedly hijacked by bogus traffic official in North West province when the driver was transporting maize from Lichtenburg and en route to Randfontein in Gauteng.

According to a media statement released by the Mpumalanga SAPS Provincial Commissioner the driver was rescued when police at Delmas and members of the private vehicle recovery team were on their way to recover another truck which was hijacked in a separate scene at the R50 road from Delmas to Bapsfontein and whilst busy on the scene, a report of another possible hijacked truck was received that the other hijacked truck was driving on the same route.

“Police waited for the truck and attempts of stopping with no success as the hijackers disregarded the police commands and the police resolved to using tactical methods to bringing the hi-jackers to stop,” said Brigadier Selvy Mohlala, Communication Spokesperson of the Mpumalanga SAPS Provincial Commissioner.

It was further stated that three suspects got out of the truck and in their attempt to flee a 47-year-old suspect was shot and apprehended meanwhile the other two managed to escape.

“The injured suspect was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard. He has since been discharged and is to appear before Delmas Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 21 October 2022,” said Mohlala in closing.

Mpumalanga SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Daphney Semakaleng Manamela applauded the members for the dedication and commitment for showing zero tolerance towards hi-jacking
