Kinross police are urging community members to exercise caution when using hitchhiking as a mode of transport following a reported robbery and kidnapping incident on 21 September 2026.
According to police, the complainant alleges that she was hitchhiking at the Kinross four-way stop towards Leslie when a white Volkswagen Polo, with registration number NC64DLGP, stopped and offered her a lift to Leslie.
She accepted the lift and got into the vehicle. However, when they passed Extension 25 in Kinross, one of the suspects allegedly pointed a firearm at her and ordered her to hand over her cellphone and money of which she complied.
The suspects allegedly continued driving towards the Ogies Road, opposite Mnguni Farm, where they stopped the vehicle and ordered the woman to get out and lie face down without looking at them.
The suspects then allegedly removed her suitcase from the vehicle and placed it next to her before driving away.
The woman subsequently managed to obtain a lift to the Leslie Police Station, where she reported the incident.
The case was later transferred to Kinross SAPS for further investigation.
Kinross police are urging community members to remain vigilant when accepting lifts from strangers and to consider safer and more reliable modes of transportation where possible.
