The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL), urges motorists to exercise due diligence and caution as the rain continues to fall on most parts of the province.

The Department is appealing to drivers to avoid crossing low-lying bridges if they are not sure whether it is safe to do so.

Motorists are also encouraged to keep their headlights on, reduce speeding, and increase the following distance.

Drivers are also advised to observe the following basic safety principles:

  • Check your tyre pressure and windscreens defects to avoid distraction while driving;
  • Check out pedestrians who are at times a source of danger to other motorists.
  • In the event of a breakdown, make sure you are safe before alerting the vehicle.
  • Aviod using the cellphone while driving unless you are using it hands-free;

Be vigilant enough around other vehicles in order to identify a potential source of danger.

On the other hand, traffic officers remain on high alert during this weekend as many people are expected to return to work while inland schools are also opening on Monday.

People should generally expect some delays, and that is why tolerance and patience are required on the part of motorists.
