A 60-year-old woman from eMbalenhle appeared before the Evander Magistrate court on Wednesday, 26 February 2025 for a formal bail application facing robbery, assault (GBH), kidnapping, and attempted murder charges.
According to information, the old woman’s Television (TV) was allegedly stolen from her house by someone known to her.
In a quest to recover the said TV, it is alleged that a small group of community members got hold of the person suspected to have taken the TV, where they broke into his home and put him in the boot of a car. It is further alleged that the victim was tied with a rope on his hands and feet. The old woman was said to have used a panga to assault him, poured petrol, and set alight.
Fortunately, the victim was able to diffuse the fire and was taken to the hospital by his sister.
The court found that it was in the interest of justice that the old woman be released on bail, and further posed conditions for her bail.
She was warned to appear again at the Evander Magistrate’s court for further investigations.
