Two security officials and one Mine employee were said to have been held hostage by the illegal miners during the early hours of this morning.
According to Capt Mhlanga from Evander Police Station, all three were rescued and some of the illegal miners were arrested.
The illegal miners were also said to have tried to blast the safe to gain entrance to the smelt house but failed.
Pan African Resources Spokesperson, Mr Hethen Hira confirmed the incident and said all the people who were held hostage were rescued.
He further mentioned that no one was injured and the police found some equipment and a vehicle used by the illegal miners.
“It was a failed attempt.
“There was a small blast at the entrance of the smelt house, but nothing was taken,” said Hira.
Police and Security Executives are still on site for further search of the suspects who escaped.
