Police in Kanyamazane, outside of Nelspruit, are looking for individuals connected to a Cash-In-Transit (CIT) robbery that happened in the early hours of Monday, 17 July 2023, at about 09:30 morning in the area near Emfuleni Park.
According to a report, security personnel were operating an armored vehicle that was transferring cash along the Legogota Road in Kanyamazane. Based on reports, a white Mercedes Benz driven by suspects suddenly appeared and struck the armored vehicle head-on, causing it to flip.
A group of roughly 15 armed suspects attacked the guards when they refused to unlock the door and began firing randomly at the armed vehicle. Both a rifle and a pistol belonging to the guards were apparently stolen.
Additionally, it is claimed that the suspects allegedly detonated explosives while stealing cash from the armored car.
The suspects allegedly used two white Ford Rangers to drive away from the crime site in an unknown direction while still in possession of the stolen goods and cash.
The attackers apparently set the Mercedes Benz fire before stealing the cash van.
The police at Kanyamazane were informed about the incident and attended the scene with other role-players within the service whereby a case was opened accordingly. Two security guards reportedly sustained some injuries after their vehicle overturned and they are currently receiving medical treatment in hospital.
No one has been arrested so far and the Police call on anyone with information that may assist in apprehending the perpetrators to call the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111 or send information via MYSAPSAPP. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.
The Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela has indicated that the investigation team will work tirelessly to ensure that perpetrators thereof are soon brought to book.
