Two South African nationals, aged 24 and 39, are expected to appear in the Standerton Magistrate’s Court today following their arrest in connection with a clandestine drug laboratory uncovered in Flora Park, Standerton.

The duo was apprehended on Tuesday, 08 April 2025, just four days after six Mozambican nationals were arrested in Standerton for similar drug-related activities.

The arrest stems from an intensive investigation led by the Hawks’ Secunda-based Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, following a surge in drug possession cases reported in the area. The operation successfully traced the origin of illicit substances, resulting in the clampdown of two illegal drug laboratories within a single week.

The multidisciplinary team — comprising the Hawks, South African Narcotic Enforcement Bureau, Standerton Crime Intelligence, Standerton K9 Unit, Standerton Local Criminal Record Centre, the Forensic Science Laboratory (Chemistry Unit), and a private security company — executed the operation with precision.

Among the items seized were a drug pressing machine valued at R2 million and 35 buckets of powder ready for tablet pressing, with an estimated street value of R26 million.

In addition, seven vehicles were discovered on the premises. Although they were unlocked, all the trunks were locked. Investigations into the contents and ownership of the vehicles are ongoing.

Major General Nico Gerber, Mpumalanga Provincial Head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commended the teams for their diligence and success.

“These arrests and recoveries should serve as a warning to other would-be offenders to refrain from such activities in the province, as we will knock on your doors shortly,”Major General Nico Gerber said.

The investigation continues.
