The Office of the Speaker, together with the Moral Regeneration Movement and various external stakeholders, held a successful crime awareness campaign in Lebohang on Wednesday, 20 November 2024.
The campaign was aimed at mobilising the community against crime and discussing a variety of issues, including finding solutions on all forms of crime that have overwhelmed the community.
Community members were educated about crime preventative measures for substance abuse, theft, house breaking and theft, robbery, sexual offences, domestic violence, and assault.Other problematic issues that affect the police function, such as missing children and child negligence, were strongly addressed.
The community was further warned not to withdraw assault cases and cases that involve women and children and let the court finalise the process.
Lieutenant – Colonel Khuselwa Matrose the station commander of Leslie police station said the station receives most assault GBH cases although said she could not be brief about the statistics of crime in Leandra as only the minister has the right to do so.
Matrose urged members of the community to Refrain from withdrawing assault GBH cases and let the law take its course. Community members also raised concerns about the service they receive at the police station.
Various stakeholders shared the stage and explained the services that they are providing and how the victims can be assisted.
The campaign was supported by various stakeholders that included the Community Police Forum, South African Police Service, Department of Social Services, Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, Fire & Rescue Service, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Thuthuzela Care Centre, organised religion and traditional leaders.
Every member of the community was encouraged to participate in the community projects that are aimed at reducing crime within the community.
