The Govan Mbeki Municipality’s Special Projects and Transversal Section, in partnership with the Department of Social Development, launched the zonal structure of people with disabilities on Thursday, 20 March 2025, at Ext 18 South Hall in eMbalenhle.

The launch aims to reaffirm the municipality’s commitment to creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for people with disabilities in the Govan Mbeki municipal area and beyond.

“We as the municipality believe that this structure will help us support and protect people who have disabilities in our area,” said Ms Mary Mlotshwa from GMM Special Projects Officer: Women, elderly and disabled.

Following a transparent and structured nomination process, the new eMbalenhle Zonal Structure for people with disabilities was elected as follows: Sfiso Shongwe as the chairperson, Bongane Mthimunye as the deputy chairperson, Khuselo Thela as the secretary, Marcia Nkosi as the deputy secretary, Mbali Nkosi as the treasurer, and Fikile Sibelo and Sipho Nkosi as additional members.

“I am happy, and I promise to fulfill my duties because we have been fighting for this structure, as we believe that it will help us a lot,” said Sfiso Shongwe, newly elected chairperson in eMbalenhle.

The elected members will commence their duties as soon as they receive training.

The next disability zonal structure launch will be held on Tuesday, 08 April 2025, at Raymond Mavuso Hall in eMzinoni.
