Tavern owners and liquor traders must play a role in ensuring security of their places.

They must beef up security measures and also work closely with the police and other stakeholders to strengthen crime prevention measures.

The number of shooting incidences in places of entertainment at night seems to be on the rise in the province.

This requires all stakeholders and communities to work together.

This is according to the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mr. Vusi Shongwe, who was reacting to the latest reports of shooting at a tavern in Tweefontein that left three people dead this past Sunday.

Other shooting cases that occurred in the vicinity of taverns were previously reported in Mantengelani in Bushbuchbuckridge, Piet Retief and Mayflower to mention a few.

“We are making a plea to tavern owners to unite in the fight against crime.

They must never allow their places of entertainment to be turned into war zones. Therefore close collaborations must be forged with communities and the police.

Communities must also play their part by reporting any suspicious people or activities to the police,” says Shongwe.

He has appreciated the efforts of the police as they have already set up a taskteam to urgently arrest culprits in the Tweefontein shooting incident.

“We also condemn the acts of these shameless criminals who have scant regard for human life.

Our police should spare effort to ensure justice prevail and that they pay for what they did,” the MEC says.

He is also sending condolences to the bereaved families.
